Prevailing Agricultural Practices

Pink-shaded regions indicate regions of commercial gardening, which includes parts of the southeastern United States, some in the western United States, northern Africa, central Asia, and southern Australia, as well as western Sweden. Purple-shaded regions represent dairy farming, notably seen in parts of northern Europe, such as the United Kingdom, Denmark, and the Netherlands, as well as parts of the northeastern and southeastern United States, northeastern New Zealand, and southeastern coastal regions of Australia. Orange shaded regions show grain farming, visible across large portions of the central United States, Canada, and parts of Europe including Ukraine and southern Russia, as well as parts of Argentina and southern Australia. Blue shaded regions denote intensive subsistence farming with wet rice dominant, primarily seen in parts of eastern China, the western and eastern coastal regions of India including Nepal, Bangladesh, and Southeast Asia. Green shaded regions represent intensive subsistence farming where wet rice is not dominant, covering areas in North, West, and East Asia, parts of China, much of India, Pakistan, and some regions in Africa and Central and South America. Light pink shaded regions indicate areas with little or no agriculture, found in parts of northern Canada, Greenland, northern Russia, some desert areas in Africa and the Middle East, and central parts of Australia. Green shaded areas show livestock ranching, prevalent in parts of the western United States, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Australia. Light orange shaded regions represent Mediterranean agriculture, visible in areas around the Mediterranean Sea including parts of Spain, Italy, Greece, and Turkey, as well as coastal California, Chile, and South Africa. Yellow shaded regions indicate mixed crop and livestock farming, observed in parts of central Europe, the eastern United States, and some regions in South America, South Africa, and southern Russia. Dark green shaded regions denote pastoral nomadism, mainly found in parts of North Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
