Ocean depth, in meters

NOAA

A map illustrates the different depth zones of the coastal areas. The shallowest areas (light blue), are near the coasts, such as the eastern United States and Europe. The deepest regions (dark blue), are in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

Shallow ocean areas near continents' coastlines range from sea level to negative 200 meters and are shaded in light yellow. Continental shelves and upper slopes, shaded in yellow, are found between negative 201 to negative 2,000 meters. Mid-ocean depths, including parts of the abyssal plains, range from negative 2,000 to negative 3,000 meters and are shaded in orange. Deeper ocean areas, extending further into the abyssal plains, range from negative 3,000 to negative 4,000 meters in dark orange. Deep ocean regions, covering significant portions of the ocean floor, range from negative 4,000 to negative 5,000 meters in dark brown. Very deep ocean trenches and basins are found between negative 5,000 to negative 6,000 meters and are shaded in blue. The deepest parts of the ocean, including the Mariana Trench and other deep-sea trenches, are below negative 6,000 meters and are represented in dark blue.
