WorldEconomicThe Gender Development Index (GDI) is an adjustment to the Human Development Index (HDI) score, which is a composite of life expectancy, education, and per-capita income indicators. The GDI adjusts the HDI for gender gaps in the HDI variables. Values approaching 1.0 indicate gender equality, values greater than 1.0 indicate higher development for women when compared to men, and values less than 1.0 indicate lower levels of development for women when compared to men.
A map shows the Gender Development Index scores. More than 1 (dark blue): The U S and Russia. Scores between 0.9 to 1 (blue): South America, Canada, Australia, most of Europe. Scores between 0.8 to 0.9 (blue): Africa and South Asia.
