The 2000 presidential election in the United States pitted Republican George W. Bush against Democrat Al Gore. This layer portrays the popular vote results at the county and county-equivalent level. The map portrays the winner of the popular vote while data probing, placing the mouse over a county, displays the percentage of the vote for each candidate and the total number of votes cast. In the 2000 election, Mr. Bush won the majority of counties and county equivalents. Mr. Gore won the popular vote in the following areas. First, he won the vote in most of the major urban centers. Exceptions were Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, Austin, Oklahoma City, Omaha, Salt Lake City, and Indianapolis. Mr. Gore also won in northern Arizona, northern New Mexico, southern Colorado, along the southern half of the Mississippi River, extreme southern Texas, a zone extending from central Alabama through central Georgia, into eastern North Carolina. Mr. Gore won in the Appalachian mountains and the majority of counties in New England. Mr. Bush won the Alaskan municipalities while Mr. Gore won the counties of Hawaii.
