Median Age (U.S.)

North AmericaPopulation

Median age in years of the U.S. population by county

U.S. Census Bureau
The map shows that in most counties in the United States, the median age is between 33 and 42 years. However, there are several regions where the median age is higher, and there are also scattered counties where the median age is lower. In the eastern United States, most states are mainly between 33 and 42 years. In the Northeast, counties with a median age between 43 and 52 years occur in northern New York, northern Maine, rural New England, and parts of Pennsylvania. In the South, counties between 43 and 52 years are found in western Virginia, the southern Appalachian mountains, northern Arkansas, and Florida. The latter also has several counties between 53 and 63 years. In the Midwest, the median age is between 43 and 52 years in counties in northern parts of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, as well as in Iowa, and to a lesser extent, in Missouri. States in the northern Great Plains (North and South Dakota and Nebraska) have numeroCounties between 43 and 52 years. At the same time, South Dakota has several counties that are younger, between 22 and 32 years. The northern Rocky Mountain states (central and northern Idaho and Montana) have more counties between 43 and 52 years than between 33 and 42 years. States farther south—Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico—are younger, with most counties between 33 and 42 years. New Mexico also has two counties between 53 and 63 years. Northern Utah, northeastern Arizona, and southern Idaho have younger median ages, with counties between 22 and 32 years. Southeastern Arizona and Nevada are between 33 and 52 years, with one county in southeastern Arizona between 53 and 63 years. Along the Pacific Coast, most counties are between 33 and 52 years. Exceptions include one coastal county each in Oregon and Washington that is between 53 and 63 years; an area in eastern Washington that is 22 to 32 years; and much of California’s Central Valley and inland counties from the San Francisco Bay area southward, where the median age is between 27 and 32 years. Hawaii’s median age is between 22 and 42 years. Most of Alaska’s median age is between 33 and 42 years, except along the western side of the state, where median ages are between 22 and 32 years, and parts of the panhandle, which are between 43 and 52 years.
