The 2016 presidential election in the United States pitted Republican Donald Trump against Democrat Hillary Clinton. This layer portrays the popular vote results at the county and county-equivalent level. The map portrays the winner of the popular vote while data probing, placing the mouse over a county, displays the percentage of the vote for each candidate and the total number of votes cast. In the 2016 election, Mr. Trump won most of the counties and county equivalents of the continental United States. Ms. Clinton won most of the counties containing the country’s large urban centers as well as much of California, New Mexico, counties along the lower Mississippi River, and most of the counties in New England. Noteworthy for Mr. Trump was that he won the majority of counties in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.
